Why is a site down from one location and up from the others?
The trouble is usually on the way between that location and the site, not at the site itself. That is why, on paid Plans, You Up? confirms a failure from other locations before it alerts you.
What counts as down?
A name that does not resolve, a connection that is refused or cannot be made secure, no answer within 10 seconds, or an error answer from the site, such as 500.
Can I check a local or private address?
No. The Down checker checks only addresses anyone can reach from the internet. localhost and addresses on a private network, such as 192.168.1.20, are refused.
Is it free?
Yes, with no account. There is a limit on how many checks one person can run in an hour, and when too many are running at once, it asks you to try again shortly.
Is what I check kept?
Not past its answer, which is shown again to anyone who checks the same address within 5 minutes. The Down checker never shows what the site sent back.
